The Royal Canadian Legion Troop Morale Fund is an initiative of the Legion to buy each of our troops posted in Afghanistan a Tim Horton’s coffee and a doughnut at least every two weeks. Mitchell Branch 128 has been gathering donations and holding fund raising events, and have collected $500.00 so far. Ontario Command Provincial President George O’Dair declared this past February 14th, 2009 as “Support Our Troops Day”. Many local legions, including Mitchell held fund raising events on this day.
Recently, Branch 128 1st Vice President, Derek Yeadon had the privilege to meet a brother and sister who have served in Afghanistan. Captain Travis (T.J.) Kelley and Trisha Kelley. Proud parents are Mike and Anette (nee Wolfkamp) Kelley of Meaford. T.J. completed a nine month posting as a task force engineer intelligence officer in Kandahar. Trisha completed a six month civilian position working at various retail shops run by Canada on base in Kandahar, including Tim Horton’s. Both T.J. and Trisha commented on how much the soldiers enjoy their free coffee and are very appreciative of the Legion initiative. T.J. noted that the coffee cards are handed out to everyone, and if out in the field then they are held and given to the soldiers on their return to base. Not only Canadian’s but also British, French and Dutch troops frequent Tim Horton’s. Trisha informed Derek that the Kandahar franchise has the 2nd most transactions of all Tim Horton’s, and also that this is a not for profit franchise with the proceeds returning to our troops.
On behalf of Branch 128, Derek expressed our gratitude for the job these two young people have chosen and that he was honoured to have met them.
Mitchell Branch 128 wishes to thank T.J. and Trisha for taking the time to meet with Derek during a very busy family get together. Our thoughts will be with you in your future endeavors.
Anyone wishing to make a donation to the RCL Troop Morale Fund may do so at the Mitchell Legion, 175 St. Andrew St.
